Al Ittihad Beat Al Jazira 4–1 to Reach the AFC Elite League Stage

Al Ittihad players celebrating during a match

Al Ittihad defeated Al Jazira 4–1 at Mohammed bin Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi, securing a place in the 2026–27 AFC Champions League Elite league stage.

Steven Bergwijn scored twice during the first half before Houssem Aouar and Marwan Al Sahafi extended the Saudi club’s advantage. Simon Banza scored Al Jazira’s only goal late in the match.

Unlike European summer friendlies such as Manchester United’s 1–1 meeting with PSG, the Abu Dhabi contest carried an immediate consequence: the winner advanced, while the loser left the competition.

Bergwijn puts Al Ittihad in control

Al Ittihad took the lead in the 12th minute. Moussa Diaby delivered a cross that Al Jazira failed to clear, allowing Bergwijn to strike the loose ball and give the visitors an early advantage.

Bergwijn added his second goal in the 38th minute, placing Al Ittihad in a commanding position before half-time. The winger’s movement repeatedly created problems for the home defence, while the visitors prevented Al Jazira from establishing sustained possession in dangerous areas.

The two-goal lead allowed Al Ittihad to control the pace of the match after the interval. Al Jazira needed to take greater risks, which created additional space for the Saudi side’s attacking players.

Aouar and Al Sahafi complete the victory

Aouar scored Al Ittihad’s third goal in the 54th minute, further reducing Al Jazira’s prospects of mounting a comeback. Al Sahafi then made it 4–0 in the 69th minute.

Banza pulled one back for Al Jazira in the 80th minute, but the goal arrived too late to change the direction of the contest. Al Ittihad managed the remaining minutes and completed a convincing away victory.

The score reflected Al Ittihad’s greater efficiency in decisive moments. Al Jazira had periods in which they competed for territory and possession, but defensive errors and the visitors’ finishing separated the teams.

What the result means

The victory moved Al Ittihad into the AFC Champions League Elite league stage, where the club joined the continent’s leading qualifiers for the expanded 2026–27 competition.

For Al Jazira, elimination brought an early end to the continental campaign. The defeat also highlighted the defensive discipline and concentration required against opponents capable of converting small openings into clear scoring opportunities.

Al Ittihad left Abu Dhabi with qualification secured and four different phases of attacking play reflected in their goals. Bergwijn’s first-half contribution established control, while Aouar and Al Sahafi ensured that Al Jazira were unable to turn the match into a late contest.
